Soon, what began in Europe as the French day bed, often built for one person and arranged as a room’s centrepiece, became the still cherished beds we find on showroom floors today—those of the classic mahogany veneer style of curled foot and head, crafted out of cherry or oak or pine, but also of steel or upholstered with leather, and made for more than one sleeper in a room with more than just the status symbol that this bed design had become.

Some suggest against a far wall makes the sleigh bed the day bed again. Some recommend sticking with the exaggeration of size and curl of foot and head (keeping the classic “sleigh” look) and making the piece a handsome stand-alone in a sparsely decorated room. And some say the stray from the original sleigh tradition can go as far as doing away with the grand curls, going for leather and lace adornment, and moving toward a more modern aesthetic.

Regardless of personal preferences, whether in Europe or in the states, be they sun room additions or showcase centrepieces, sleigh beds are here to stay. Just ask the longstanding designers, builders, and showroom salespeople, as well as the thousands of delighted sleigh bed owners!

Sleigh Beds Have a Long and Illustrious History

August 15th, 2011

Sleigh beds—low to the floor, stoutly constructed, and bearing the signature scrolled headboard and foot board—are unique in look, are favored by many, and come to us today with a rich history of great purpose.

Taking inspiration from the Roman Empire, the courts of Napoleon prompted the creation of such beds and other furniture that developed by way of what came to be known as the Empire style. This style, ornamented by Victorian design sensibilities or streamlined for simplicity, was applied down through the nineteenth century by the French as well as the Americans (particularly on the east coast) and survived into the present day. With a few differences.

Where the wood craftsmen creating heavy wood platforms and robust carved, rolled wood head- and foot boards left off is where innovative designers using alternative materials and adding or taking away lines picked up.

A brief history of sleigh beds.

June 27th, 2011

The sleigh bed style comes from the French and American Empire period in the early 19th century.  The American Empire drew their inspiration for the sleigh bed from ancient Rome and Greece. The sleigh bed from the French and American Empire was made from wood.

The sleigh bed has curved or scrolled head and foot boards which resemble the shape of a sled or sleigh of which it is named after. Today’s sleigh beds often feature less exaggerated curved and scrolled head and foot boards, they are made from a wide variety of materials such as aluminium, iron, leather, steel and wood. The most popular material for a sleigh bed is wood this means the bed looks much more like the cones created during the French and American Empire period.

The wooden sleigh bed gives a more traditional look to the bedroom while a leather sleigh bed gives a more modern look to the bedroom.
